A man who ploughed into a pensioner on a Tesco Express petrol forecourt and then drove off has been jailed.

Patricia Briggs spent three days in hospital after Dale Murphy knocked her down and drove away without checking on her.

Murphy, who had not passed his driving test, was traced using CCTV footage from Moldgreen petrol station, west of Huddersfield, where the incident occurred.

He admitted charges of failing to stop after an accident, driving without a licence or insurance and careless driving.

Prosecutor Linda Fowler told Kirklees Magistrates Court that on February 13 Murphy had filled up his Fiat Coupe at the petrol station on Wakefield Road.

He paid for his fuel and as he left, hit Mrs Briggs as she walked across the forecourt. She hit the bonnet and fell to the ground but Murphy continued on his journey.

Fowler said: “Mr Murphy drove away from the scene. He made no attempt to check on her condition.”

Staff at the petrol station rushed to her aid and took her to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary where she spent three days undergoing treatment and checks.

Fowler said: “She suffered injuries to her knees and back.

“As a result of the incident her arthritis was worsened and she has been confined to the house.”
