There are lots of things that make a successful forecourt manager but attention to detail is one of the main ones, says Jason Tamplin, who manages Symonds Forecourts’ Budgens of Wells in Somerset, the overall winning site in the 2012 awards.

"You have to run the business like it’s your own, keeping an eye on margins and not being afraid to try new things. You’ve got to do things that customers don’t expect from a general garage," says Jason. "It’s also important to have a good team that understands what you’re trying to achieve."

Jason has introduced a number of initiatives in the eight years he has worked for Symonds but he counts the tasting days he arranged with local suppliers at Wells to be his most successful. "They were great because it gave customers the chance to try different products and us the opportunity to talk to our customers and understand what they want."
