Officers from Thetford CID are appealing for witnesses to a burglary which took place at a Tesco superstore’s petrol station in Dereham, Norfolk, in the early hours of Friday February 1.

At approximately 1:40am, two men in dark clothing smashed glass in a door at the filling station on Kingston Road to break in, and stole a substantial amount of cigarettes, which they removed in black plastic bins.

They then fled from the scene in a dark coloured Vauxhall car heading towards Swaffham on the A47.

The garage was shut at the time of the burglary and no staff were present. The superstore was able to open and trade as normal the next morning but the petrol station was taped off by police until about midday.

Officers are linking the incident to the theft of number plates from a vehicle in Laburnum Crescent in Dereham the same night.

The car owner was woken by police at about 2.30am and told of the theft of the plates and the vehicle had to be taken away for forensic checks.

Anyone with information about the burglary or theft should call Thetford CID on 101 or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
