John Williamson has been appointed as the new chief executive of Topaz, Ireland’s largest fuels and convenience retailer. The announcement was made today by the company’s chairman, Neil O’Leary.

The announcement follows the resignation of former chief executive Eddie O’Brien, who resigned in order to take up a senior position with DCC.

Williamson (44) is currently chief financial officer at the company. He joined Topaz in 2009 having previously worked as chief financial officer of Payzone plc.

Speaking today Neil O’Leary paid tribute to Williamson: “John has made a very strong impact as CFO during what has been a difficult environment for retail companies generally. He is exceptionally well suited to lead the business through the coming years and we are looking forward very much to working with him in this new role.”

Williamson said he was “delighted” at the appointment; “This is a fantastic company to work for and it’s a great honour to be appointed as chief executive. I’m particularly conscious of the strength in depth of our senior management team and I look forward to working with them in the coming years to bring this company on from strength to strength.”
