BP has praised staff at its petrol station in South Mimms for acting quickly and safely when a burning car entered the forecourt in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
A Land Rover pulled onto the site at the Welcome Break service area off junction 23 of the M25 with smoke coming from underneath the bonnet. It is thought the driver got out of the car and tried to fix the problem but staff immediately called the emergency services and evacuated the site.
The car was alight by the time firefighters arrived but the fire was extinguished within an hour.
A BP spokesman said: “The staff were really good and raised the call to emergency services straight away, and evacuated and shut the site while fire services came in to deal with it. Thankfully nobody was injured.”
A petrol pump had been badly damaged in the fire, along with some minor damage to the forecourt canopy, and that part of the forecourt remains closed off.
