On-site training for young employees is proving a big success for Top 50 Indie Sewell Retail.

Abi Seekings, aged 20, has just completed a Level Two Retail Skills apprenticeship with Sewell Retail and East Riding College.

Working at the company’s award-winning Chanterlands site, she completed all the elements of the course while at work, with college staff visiting her every few weeks to assess her development and progress.

Becky Wilburn, people and brand manager at Sewell Group, said: “Abi has been a bit of a success story for us. We believe that by bringing fresh talent into the organisation, and developing our people within the organisation we can become a great company to work for and, in turn, become a great company to deal with.

“For us, the benefit of having people carrying out on-site training, is that they can bring their new training and skills to the workplace and to their teams. This has also had a positive impact on other members of our team, sales assistants and managers alike, in terms of enrolling on apprenticeships or NVQs.”

Sewell Retail, part of Sewell Group, has about 190 retail staff in 12 petrol stations and convenience stores across Hull and the East Riding. The company enrolled Abi and two other level-three apprentices with East Riding College at the same time. It was so impressed with how the apprentices were performing, that the company has since taken on three more.

Becky Wilburn added: “Abi has set the example and standard and shown people that it is not hard. Training can be fun and rewarding to do in the workplace. People don’t have to go to college. Sometimes, within retail, that may be what is most daunting for people.”
