Spar UK has introduced an integrated contactless EFT payment solution developed with IT partner BCP (Business Computer Projects Ltd) for its SparPoS store system.

According to the symbol group, contactless payment is one of the latest developments in payment technology, using an embedded RFID chip on cards with the usual EMV chip to let customers pay securely by waving their card over a reader at the point of sale. Benefits include faster transactions and lower fees.

While a range of standalone contactless solutions are available, Spar said its integrated SparPoS solution was believed to be a first in the c-store sector. Integrating directly to the till system, it can also cut training requirements, eliminate errors from having to re-key transactions and provide a full and secure audit trail of card payments taken through the point-of- sale. Roy Ford, Spar UK retail IT controller, said: "This provides the first steps to reducing transaction costs for debit cards for Spar retailers up to 40% cheaper than standard debit transactions."
