Total rewarded employees at an award-winning site by giving them the day off and getting head office staff to run the forecourt instead. The Pin Green forecourt in Stevenage fought off competition from 249 other stores to receive Total’s Best Premier Store Award 2008.

The competition was an internal initiative by Total, where territory managers and head office personnel set out to recognise and reward store teams that were "best in class".

Amber Abernethey, who manages Pin Green, described winning as a "fantastic achievement".

The idea of the extra day’s holiday was not only to reward the staff, but to get head office managers to witness customer care first hand, on site. They could also use the opportunity to identify any operational improvements that could be made.

Total direct operations manager, Robert Taylor, took to the pumps at Pin Green for the day. "It was a challenge taking on the running of the store and we learnt an awful lot about how our management decisions affect each store. It was a fun day and we now have a greater appreciation of all the hard work our staff put in," he said.
