The two main newsagents’ trade associations could be on a collision course after the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) announced that it would consider referring the newspapers and magazines supply market to the Competition Commission for a market investigation. The National Federation of Retail Newsagents (NFRN) requested a review under the Enterprise Act 2002. But the Association of News Retailing (ANR) has warned that an inquiry could delay progress towards the objective of achieving a more open supply chain.

Increasing duty on cigarettes will only encourage the illegal trade in tobacco, independent retailers have warned. This follows Chancellor Gordon Brown’s Budget announcement that duty on a pack of 20 will rise by 11p. Campaign group Retailers Against Smuggling claims that 34% of independent retailers have considered closing because of the illegal trade.

Magners Cider was named as c-store retailers’ Product of the Year at Convenience Store’s Top Shop Awards last month. The award was decided by a telephone poll, based on a shortlist of six products that a panel of retailers had nominated as driving incremental sales. Magners won 38% of the vote, ahead of Walkers Sensations, Cadbury’s Creme Egg Bar and Coke Zero.
