Torex Retail has launched a new vapour recovery system, which it says will save retailers money, as well as ensure that they comply with new legislation.

The Clean Air solution will help forecourt operators comply with Stage Two Petrol Vapour Recovery legislation, due to come into effect on October 1. All new petrol stations built after this date and selling more than 500,000 litres of petrol a year will be required to implement a system that captures and recycles the petrol vapour that evaporates when fuel is dispensed into a vehicle. Existing sites with a petrol throughput greater than 3.5m litres a year will also have to install a recovery system by January 2010.

Torex says its certified Clean Air solution recovers petrol vapour at the pump and allows operators to re-sell this as fuel. This means, they say, that the system will pay for itself and once paid for, deliver increased profits from fuel sales.

UK trials are said to have shown a return on investment within three years. The system is available on new petrol pumps from Torex or it can be fitted as a standalone unit on forecourt islands. It is integrated directly to the petrol pumps and requires no additional return-to-tank pipework to be installed, simplifying installation and minimising costs.

Richard Quarmby, managing director of Torex Retail’s UK petroleum and convenience business, says: "The launch of Clean Air not only helps the forecourt operator comply with new environmental legislation, it also delivers a tangible payback to them. This is the latest in a series of innovations that reinforces our commitment to the convenience and forecourt sectors as a whole. We will be showcasing this revolutionary product for the first time at The Liquid and Bulk Logistics show this year." The show takes place at Donington Park, Leicestershire, from September 27-28.

Costs have yet to be confirmed.
