Plans to redevelop a Shell forecourt at Pool-in-Wharfedale near Leeds have been put on hold after opposition from locals.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Shell wants to knock down the existing forecourt at Pool Road and build a much bigger shop but locals say the plans are “dangerous”.

A local councillor described the proposed layout as “very chaotic with cars coming in and going out from all angles”. Other concerns were presented including “excessive opening hours” and a potential threat to the village shop. In all there were 20 letters of objection.

An agent for Shell told the planning panel that the site’s underground pipework needed improving and the oil company believed its design would help cut tailbacks. However, he admitted that the company had not consulted locals or ward councillors about the application.

Council officers had recommended approval but the panel overruled them and voted to defer its decision after further talks with local councillors.
