A website that claims it can get drivers discounts on fuel has more than 200,000 motorists registered already.

Pipelinecard.org’s aim is to attract enough members to be able to negotiate a bulk-buying discount on fuel. It says "the more registrations we get, the bigger discount we can negotiate".The organisation says it is in talks with a national petrol retailer, though would disclose the name.

Membership cards are due to be sent out in May. The website claims members will be able to get fuel discounts of between 5ppl and 10ppl, but a Pipeline spokesman told Forecourt Trader the figure was more likely to be 4ppl-5ppl.

The spokesman described Pipeline as a membership organisation rather than a company, and said members had not been asked for any money, nor had they supplied their bank details.

He added that the popularity of the scheme had taken the organisation by surprise -- so much so that membership numbers might have to be capped.
