The snacking market in the UK is worth a whopping £18.8bn (IRI 52 weeks ending November 27, 2010), with chocolate the largest category worth £3.45bn. These details are highlighted in Mars' 2011 Market Review. The report also reveals that confectionery is the biggest impulse category with 68% of it bought on impulse twice as much as soft drinks, and three times as much as crisps.

Philip Morris has added two new cigarettes to its range. Marlboro Gold Touch measures 7.1mm in diameter slightly less than Marlboro Gold Original and is described as "refined and smooth". The cigarettes come in a compact box designed to fit easily into a pocket or handbag. Standard and price-marked packs are available. Rrp is £6.20. The second new product is Chesterfield made using Virginia blend tobacco to give it a "distinctive, smoth flavour". There are three variants: red, blue and menthol. Rrp is £5.75 for 20 and the red variant is also available in a 10s pack, rrp £2.95.

P&G is running a 'Proud Sponsor of Mums' advertising campaign communicating the fact that it is the company behind 50 of the world's best-known household names including Ariel, Duracell, Fairy, Gillette, Pampers and Olay. Data from the US, China, France and Brazil reveals that purchase intent can be increased by up to 20% when consumers understand the link betoween P&G and its individual brands. Apparently nearly every household in the UK has at least one P&G brand; the average household has five.
