Lightning strikes for second time at Dorset petrol station

30 April, 2014

A petrol station in Christchurch, Dorset, has been struck by lightning for the second time this year.

Staff in the shop at the BP garage in Somerford Road reported the building vibrating and the power shorting out when the lightning struck at around 2pm on Monday.

The fire brigade was called and cleared the area before firefighters examined the roof with thermal imaging equipment because a burning smell had been detected.

They found a patch of heat, but no fire, and left after giving safety advice.

The site remained cordoned off waiting for structural engineers to examine it to confirm whether it would be safe to reopen.

During the severe storms in January lightning was reported to have struck the petrol station, displacing the canopy.
