Trend for convenience beats grocery sector

The 32.1bn UK convenience sector will continue to outperform the grocery market and is projected to increase sales by 5.8% a year to 42.6bn in 2015, according to the latest figures released by food and grocery analyst IGD.

The UK Grocery Retail Outlook: Opportunities Beyond 2010 report reveals that consumers will spend 182.7bn in grocery retail outlets by 2015 an average annual growth of 3.9%. It also revealed that online grocery retailing is set to double in value from 4.8bn to 9.5bn by 2015.

Gavin Rothwell, UK research manager at IGD, said: "Many UK retailers have announced major development plans in areas such as convenience and online all of which are helping drive growth. Multi-format and multi-channel strategies are gaining traction and scale as retailers seek to reach shoppers in different ways."

In a separate report from the IGD it has been revealed that almost a fifth of people (17%) who use convenience stores shop there at least once a day. A further 59% use them at least twice a week, and on average, c-shoppers make around three trips a week to a convenience store, the Small Store Shopper research reveals.

Joanne Denney-Finch, chief executive at IGD, said: "Convenience stores are clearly popular and this trend is set to continue."
