Tobacco display ban update

01 April, 2010

The debate over the government's proposal to ban tobacco displays in shops continued to rage this week with Earl Howe formally objecting to the Tobacco Advertising and Promotion (Display) (England) Regulations 2010.

Earl Howe called for the regulations to be annulled these regulations provide the detail behind the tobacco display ban.

An Imperial Tobacco spokeswoman told retailers they should be aware that the regulations would therefore be subject to a debate in the House of Lords which would decide if the regulations should stand as they are or be rejected.

She added that it was unclear whether the debate would take place before or after the election.
