The car is still the most important mode of transport, according to an AA analysis of the Government's latest National

Travel Survey.

The car accounted for 80% of distance travelled compared to 8% on surface rail. Despite this car dependence, average car mileage decreased to 8,670 in 2008 from 9,700 in 1995/97 due to the cost of fuel and the general economic position. AA president Edmund King said: "The survey shows that the car is still king. Despite the cost of fuel, we are still a nation dependent on car travel."
