The commissioning of the first hydrogen refuelling station (HRS) at a Shell site is under way following delivery of the electrolyser and buffer tank to the Extra Motorway Service Area at Cobham, in mid November. The HRS will open to the public in early 2017.

As the work started ITM Power revealed it now has full planning permission for hydrogen refuelling stations at four Shell service stations.

Most recently it has been granted full planning permission from South Bucks District Council to construct an HRS at the Shell Filling Station, Beaconsfield. The Shell Filling Station is located at the Extra Motorway Services in Beaconsfield at Junction 2 of the M40 approximately four miles northwest of the M25.

The Beaconsfield station will be the first HRS in the UK to be integrated into the existing fuel forecourt, with the hydrogen dispenser located under the main fuel forecourt canopy. The station will be deployed as part of the H2ME project and the OLEV HRS Infrastructure Grants Scheme and is co-funded by the FCH JU (Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking) and the UK government. ITM Power is currently committed to building HRSs at three Shell sites.
